What a year so far – and we are less than one month in!

As the new Principal of LDSS, I entered this particular year with a real sense of excitement. Each day I marvel at how many activities and events our students are involved in and how engaged they all seem to be. We kicked off the year with an excellent welcome back assembly which highlighted our student council’s creativity by sharing a video which they produced to remind our student body of our school rules (follow us on twitter to see the link to view their youtube post). This was followed by our annual Grade 9 Day at Camp Galbraith, where all our new students had a chance to engage in student-led ice breaker activities and make new friends.   We just ended our second week of school with a very successful school dance.

An extremely important event that has happened annually at LDSS for many years is the Terry Fox Run/Walk. This year we have decided to conduct the school wide walk on the national day, September 24th. We are extremely proud to say that we have raised over 110,000 dollars through the years, to donate to Cancer research, which many know is a cause very near and dear to our school’s heart. A very touching assembly was held last week, and we are thrilled to have many of our retired teachers join us on our annual walk this year.

Another upcoming event will be experienced on September 25th when a number of our students will visit the Ed Mirvish Theatre and delight in the musical show WICKED. The show’s central themes are discrimination, bullying and the right to stand up for one’s beliefs. We hope that many of these students will bring conversations, around these topics, back to our school as we continue to promote our inclusive environment.

AMDSB’s International Program continues to welcome more international students to our schools than ever before. This year we have the privilege of hosting twelve international students at LDSS, all of which are experiencing the benefits of rural Ontario. Seven of our international students studying at LDSS are from Brazil. Again this year, these fortunate students received a scholarship by qualifying for the Win the World Program sponsored by the Brazilian Government. The additional 5 students have come to us from various countries, which include Japan, China, Spain and France. I would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the host families of our International Students. Without you, this experience wouldn’t be possible and you play the biggest role in providing an authentic Canadian experience.

On the renovation front, you may have seen some of our new and improved facilities. We are excited to have a bigger and much nicer cafeteria for the students to eat in. They may choose to frequent our new servery and then have lunch in a more spacious and inviting space. We are also excited to shortly move into our updated science/physics room and make use of the collaboration room located adjacent to the library.

And on that note, I would like to personally welcome any interested parents to our Parent Council meeting to be held at 6:30 on October 14th (also picture re-take day).   Until next time.
