News from LDSS:

Each year I begin the school year with a real sense of excitement. I am genuinely awed by how many activities and events our students and staff truly engage in. We kicked off the year with an excellent welcome back assembly where we welcomed our new staff: Jordan Nuhn and Dawn Skinner as custodial staff, Jenna Speers and Kim Eisler as EAs, and returning to LDSS are Tyler Campbell, Lyndsay Coghlin, Rose Vance, Mike Chmatil, and Bailey Berlett as teaching staff. Finally, Helena Finch will be joining Katey Kneider as our Learning 4 All coaches. Our student council’s creativity was emphasized by a video produced by them, which reminded our student body of ways to ensure success @ LDSS.

This summer’s construction took a twist as it was primarily electronic. You will notice the new state of the art electronic sign in front of the school. A special thank you must go out to our parent council for contributing $4000 toward this purchase.   Additionally, we developed a whole new website for the school over the summer. Visit to check us out. The website highlights resources for students and parents, provides quick links for checking weather, the busses, has an anti-bullying reporting button, and provides a calendar for all the upcoming LDSS significant dates.

It is tradition at LDSS for Grade 9 students to attend an activity-packed day at Camp Gallbraith, where all our new students engage in student-led ice breaker activities and they are provided an opportunity to make new friends. This day was a huge success.

An extremely important event which is close to our hearts and happens annually at LDSS is the Terry Fox Run/Walk. This year we have decided to conduct the school wide walk on the national day on September 30th. Additionally, we should note that the e-OSSLT EQAO scheduled for November 24, 2015 (one of two tests), was cancelled and only a single OSSLT test will be delivered on March 31, 2016.

AMDSB’s International Program continues to welcome international students to our schools. This year we have the privilege of hosting 15 International Students at LDSS, all of which are experiencing the benefits of rural Ontario. 9 of our international students studying at LDSS are from Brazil. The additional 6 students have come to us from various countries, which include Japan, Spain and Germany. I would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the host families of our International Students. Without you this experience wouldn’t be possible and you play a significant role in providing an authentic Canadian experience.

On a provincial note, the Specialist High Skills Major program is expanding across Ontario. In fact, starting this fall, more than 46,000 students will be enrolled in 1,760 Specialist High Skills Major programs — this represents 2,000 additional students and 123 new programs compared to 2014-15 school year. LDSS is proud to offer one of these new programs in the Health and Wellness sector. Learn more at

On that note, I would like to personally welcome any interested parents to our next Parent Council meeting to be held at 6:30 on Sept 28th. And we hope to see the parents of our graduates on October 9th for Commencement. Until next time!
